What is a Lucid Dream?

A Lucid Dream (LD) is more than just a vivid dream. It is when you notice that you are dreaming. The term was popularised by Lucidity Institute researcher Dr Stephen LaBerge (author of ETWOLD - Exploring The World of Lucid Dreaming)

How can I learn to get lucid?

Begin by practising reality checks throughout the day. A good check is looking at your digital watch, checking the time, then looking again for a second and possibly third time. If the display seems to malfunction you may be dreaming! Keeping a dream journal - writing down all your dreams is essential too, because you can notice dreamsigns - the repetive elements of your dreams. Other techniques to get Lucid include WILD and MILD. Explanations will be added later on..

Why should I lucid dream?

Lucid dreaming is an enjoyable activity. Everyone dreams, so why make the most of our dreams? You can do anything in your dreams, such as flying, practicing some activity like playing the guitar, even just talking to dream characters (DC's).

Is Lucid Dreaming dangerous? How can I distinguish between a dream where I am lucid and a dream where I dream about being lucid.

Since lucid dreams are physiologically just dreams (even though you can do much more than in normal dreams), there is nothing dangerous about them.

Is the mind really fully rational in a lucid dream?

From most experiences, it would seem that rationality is variable from dream to dream. Sometimes we are more rational in one LD than the previous or next one. It is easy to forget to do a task in an LD, so it is recommended to think about the tasks you want to do in your next LD beforehand.
